# Exclusive: Carlton Palmer urges Newcastle to loan out Matty Longstaff

**Carlton Palmer reckons that Newcastle midfielder Matty Longstaff needs to go out on loan next season and play regular football.**

The midfielder burst on the scene by scoring a sensational winning goal against Manchester United back in October 2019, making [16](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matthew-longstaff/leistungsdaten/spieler/484387/plus/0?saison=2019) appearances during his breakthrough campaign for the Magpies.

However, last season proved an extremely frustrating period for the 21-year-old, who played just [five](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matthew-longstaff/leistungsdaten/spieler/484387/plus/0?saison=2020) times in the Premier League, and not a single minute since the defeat at Arsenal in February.

Longstaff was strongly linked away from the club last summer but committed his future to Newcastle by penning a new two-year contract.

But the youngster has just 12 months remaining on that deal and is reportedly being made available for a loan move, with relegated [West Brom](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/matty-longstaff-newcastle-united-norwich-20884821) in the race for his services.

[£24,000 per-week](https://salarysport.com/football/player/matty-longstaff/) star, Longstaff, wants to fight for his place under Steve Bruce next term, but Palmer recognises the importance of continuing his development by utilising the loan system.

He told [The Transfer Tavern](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/):

*“He needs to play and develop. But if they can get him out on a season-long loan, that would be great business for the football club.*

*“You can’t develop as a young player sat on the bench or in the reserves. It’s not the same as competitive first-team football, that’s when you learn your craft.”*
