# Exclusive: Ex-PL star drops verdict on “massive” West Ham blow

**Carlton Palmer insists that West Ham United have been dealt a severe blow this summer in their pursuit of Jesse Lingard.**

The Manchester United attacking midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at the Hammers and was in electric form for the club.

He [scored nine goals and laid on five assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesse-lingard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/141660) in 16 games for the Irons as they secured qualification to the Europa League with a sixth-placed finish.

They have, thus far, been unable to strike a deal to bring him back to the club on a permanent basis, however.

[Reports](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1477750/Manchester-United-transfer-news-Jesse-Lingard-West-Ham-update-latest) have suggested that the Irons remain interested in a deal to sign Lingard this summer but they have yet to bring him into east London.

Palmer believes that the Hammers have been dealt a bitter blow by their failure to bring him in, because of how important he was for David Moyes’ side last term.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: *“I think they’ll do well. I think it’s a massive blow they haven’t been able to get Lingard, I think he was a massive signing for them, I think the way he plays, his assists, his goals, I think it was massive for them.”*
