# Exclusive: Ex-Sheffield Wednesday midfielder backs decision to let Westwood go

**A lot of Sheffield Wednesday players were living off past reputations, including Keiren Westwood, claims ex-Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer.**

Westwood was one of 10 players the [Yorkshire club announced would be leaving](https://www.swfc.co.uk/news/2021/may/owls-confirm-202021-retained-list/) Hillsborough before the start of next season.

The likes of Westwood and Jordan Rhodes, who has since [agreed to join Huddersfield Town](https://www.htafc.com/news/2021/may/signing-jordan-rhodes-to-return/) on a free transfer, are out of contract and have not been offered new deals.

Ultimately, for Palmer, the decision to allow Westwood to leave is the correct one, with the ex-England international feeling that the goalkeeper and some of his team-mates have rested on their laurels.

In an exclusive interview with **TT**, Palmer said:

*“Darren \[Moore\] would have assessed it. I think there are a lot of players who have been at the club now for quite a while living off past reputations and resting on their laurels, and Keiren’s certainly one of them.*

*“He’s definitely been a good servant to the club, but I believe it’s time for him to move on.*

*“Even with all those off-field problems that they had, that squad of Sheffield Wednesday players should not have got relegated.”*

After making just [under 200](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/keiren-westwood/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/15164) appearances for Wednesday, Westwood was indeed a good servant to the League One outfit.

However, given everything that has happened this season, a fresh start for the 36-year-old and some of the Owls’ other players will probably benefit everyone – hitting the reset button may be what the club needs right now.
