# Exclusive: Palmer surprised Longstaff didn’t join a Championship side like West Brom

**Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told [The Transfer Tavern](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/) that he is surprised that Newcastle United youngster Matty Longstaff did not join a Championship club like his old side.**

During the summer transfer window, Longstaff, who is now at Aberdeen on loan, was heavily linked with a move to English football’s second division.

According to [Chronicle Live](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/matty-longstaff-newcastle-united-norwich-20884821), West Brom were just one club who were keen on bringing Longstaff in temporarily.

For whatever reason, though, a move to the Championship did not happen and the 21-year-old will now be playing his football at the Pittodrie Stadium for the rest of the season, much to Palmer’s surprise.

*“I was shocked when I saw that,”* the ex-West Brom player said to **TT**. *“I was dumbfounded when I saw that. No disrespect to Scotland, but if you’ve got the chance to play for West Brom \[or elsewhere in the Championship\], surely you’d go play there – very strange one for me.”*

West Brom have still been able to strengthen their midfield with the additions of Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby, the former making an immediate impact.

Mowatt has already scored [two](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alex-mowatt/leistungsdaten/spieler/283514) goals for his new side, including a brilliant strike against Blackburn Rovers.
