# Exclusive: Paul Stewart still unconvinced by Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty

**Former Tottenham favourite Paul Stewart still isn’t convinced by Matt Doherty.**

Signed by Jose Mourinho last summer, the right-back endured a difficult first season in north London and found himself fighting for a starting place with Serge Aurier.

Doherty featured heavily under the former Spurs boss but couldn’t produce the same form that saw him become one of the most dangerous attacking full-backs in the Premier League for Wolves.

During Wolves’ first two seasons back in the Premier League, Doherty contributed [eight goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matt-doherty/leistungsdaten/spieler/171679/plus/0?saison=2019) and 11 assists, but chipped in with just [two assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matt-doherty/leistungsdaten/spieler/171679/plus/0?saison=2020) across his 17 outings at Spurs.

It looked like Doherty’s spell at the club could be [cut short](https://mobile.twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1417834242776707079) earlier this summer, but the arrival of his former manager Nuno Espirito Santo could give him the necessary boost.

With Spurs’ other right-back Serge Aurier on the [transfer list](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-aurier-agrees-personal-terms-with-psg-as-tottenham-exit-close/), the ex-Wolves man is in likely to be first-choice, at least for the opening weeks of the campaign.

But the Republic of Ireland defender hasn’t managed to win over Stewart, who exclusively told **[The Transfer Tavern](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/)**:

*“I’m not really convinced about him. I just don’t see Doherty doing it. When they got him, that was underwhelming.”*
