Carlton Palmer has ruled out Eric Dier joining Southampton this summer – and expects the defender to be an important player for Tottenham.
Dier’s future in north London appeared in serious doubt over the summer months following some below-par form under Jose Mourinho last season.
Will Ward-Prowse stay at Southampton?
The England defender was guilty of making several costly mistakes which saw Spurs drop points late in Premier League matches.
However, with a clean slate under Nuno Espirito Santo, which led to Dier featuring heavily in pre-season before starting Tottenham’s opening day victory over Manchester City, the versatile 27-year-old would appear likely to remain in north London despite talkSPORT claiming that he was surplus to requirements.
Southampton have naturally come into the conversation after Jannik Vestergaard’s recent departure to Leicester, with Ralph Hasenhuttl still desperately searching for a replacement.
But Palmer exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that he doesn’t think Dier will end up being that man:
“I don’t think Eric Dier leaves Spurs to go to Southampton. He won’t leave Spurs to go to Southampton.
“I think he’ll play more often than you think under Nuno. I know there’s been a lot of speculation, but I think he’ll be an important part for Tottenham.”
