For a lot of Premier League fans, that Newcastle side of the 2011/12 season was one of the fiercest sides in recent years outside of the usual suspects. Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba were all quality in that team under Alan Pardew, but Papiss Cisse was the icing on a very impressive cake, and the Senegalese sensation had some incredible moments.
Throughout his four and a half years as a Magpie, Cisse produced some magic. Yet if you had to pick the best of Newcastle’s Papis Cisse there is only one moment that you can justify going for. In May 2012, high-flying Newcastle went to Stamford Bridge in search of a win to continue their hunt for a European place, and Cisse scored as good a brace as you will ever see to seal a massive 2-0 win.
That season was truly incredible for Papiss Cisse. Now 33-years-old, the striker moved from Freiberg to St James Park in January 2012. Having scored nine goals in 15 games for Freiburg in the first half of the season, the international star agreed his transfer to Newcastle before jetting off to compete in the African Cup of Nations, and when he finally arrived in the North East, he set it alight.
A total of 13 Premier League goals in his 14 games made him one of the hottest forwards in the Premier League. But nothing was brighter than his incredible double at Stamford Bridge. No opposition striker has ever scored a double as good as the brace Cisse netted that day. His first, a left-footed volley into the far corner after he’d flicked the ball up for himself with his right foot, was good, but his second was pure magic.
Words cannot do the goal that Cisse scored in the second half of that game justice. A long throw down the left was chested into his path by Demba Ba, and without evening thinking, the Magpies’ #9 swung his right foot at the ball. At first, it seemed he’d sliced his effort, but the curling outside of the boot strike looped over Petr Cech’s head and into the far corner, and to this day a Premier League goal has never been scored like it.
Papiss Cisse may just have been the best striker in the Premier League for a time in that 2011/12 season, and he peaked when those spectacular goals were scored, silencing Stamford Bridge. Eventually, the goals would start drying up as Cisse bagged 44 in 131 games for the club, but the best of Cisse at Newcastle came in that 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge and we highly recommend you watch the highlights on YouTube.
