Leeds United: Paul Robinson not convinced by new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin - Features

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has expressed his doubts over new loan signing Jean-Kevin Augustin, who has joined on an initial loan deal from German outfit RB Leipzig.

The club confirmed the deal on Monday morning, though Robinson had suggested there was an element of risk in adding the 22-year-old to their attacking ranks. Speaking to MOT Leeds News before Augustin’s arrival was confirmed, Robinson felt that he would do well to adjust to the Championship after making the move via a stint in Ligue 1 with Monaco.

He said: “He’s got an outstanding CV; my only bit of scepticism would be around the fact that it’s not worked out for him at three top clubs now and he’s only 22 years old. What’s going on with him? It didn’t work out for Augustin at PSG, it hasn’t worked out for him at Red Bull Leipzig and now it’s not worked out at Monaco. He’s only 22 – you have to ask yourself why that is.

“But Leeds have been scouting him carefully and Bielsa’s man management will be key here. He’s a manager who’s confident about getting players and making the most out of them. Leeds need him to get up to speed in a hurry – there are only a few months left of the season. However, saying that, it’s obviously a big coup for Leeds if it comes off and he’s got an outstanding CV.”

Do you expect Leeds to be busy in the transfer market?

No

While a move for a player with top-flight experience on the continent may represent a considerable feat for second-tier Leeds in the transfer market, Robinson is perhaps right to be sceptical over their hunt for Augustin’s signature.

Augustin only scored once this season for Monaco, while there is a rather desperate need for goals with Leeds scoreless for three games in all competitions prior to Tuesday’s meeting with Millwall.

The Frenchman’s record hardly suggests he is the answer for the Whites, while Robinson had previously put his support behind a more proven Championship talent with Leeds’ promotion challenge on the line.

So the former ‘keeper’s stance has at least been consistent, while his hesitation to praise the reports of links to Augustin prior to his arrival is understandable considering the striker’s current lack of what Leeds require in goals.
