When looking at this Chelsea team, one thing that is currently missing is a ruthless centre-forward.
And while Gonzalo Higuain and Alvaro Morata have shown glimpses this season, neither are quite Diego Costa.
The 30-year-old was excellent in the west London club’s two recent Premier League title-winning campaigns, and his goals have been sorely missed at Stamford Bridge.
Considering everything that was happening in the background (BBC Sport), it is not hard to understand why Antonio Conte felt he had to get rid of the controversial Spaniard.
But with Conte no longer at the helm, the Chelsea hierarchy’s decision to back the Italian and sell Costa is looking like a more ridiculous one by the day.
They should have been more forward thinking, taking into consideration that Conte’s job was never going to be tenable in the long run, with the Italian choosing to make everything a fight in the summer of 2017 (Evening Standard).
Now with Higuain possibly set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, however unlikely, some Chelsea supporters will be dreaming of a Costa homecoming if the Blues can get their transfer ban frozen.
According to Mundo Deportivo (via Daily Mail), the Atletico Madrid board have grown tired of the Spain international, who has hardly set La Liga alight since returning, and his antics.
Still, you can bet some of the Stamford Bridge faithful would take even an out-of-sorts Costa over a physically weak Morata or slow Higuain.
And when you look at some of their performances in a blue shirt this term, it is easy to see why.
