Emmanuel Emenike was about as average as they got when he joined West Ham United, and his career has, rather predictability, taken a bit of a dive.
For all those familiar with the videogame FIFA, West Ham United signing Emmanuel Emenike was a masterstroke of the highest order. Quick and strong with a powerful shot to boot, this man was the equivalent of a tank. At least, on the game he was. In reality, however, Emenike was far different.
And most certainly not in a good way.
The January signing followed an all too familiar trend of flops arriving in the winter window and crashing and burning in the most fantastic (or not) of ways. Pace and strength are all well and good if it’s coupled with technical ability; who doesn’t love seeing opposition players bounce off your very own Goliath as he stomps his way towards the opposition’s goal like a stampeding elephant before finding the net with paradoxically beautiful finesse, after all?
Unfortunately for the Hammers, they weren’t treated to this kind of dominant display. Well, they got half it anyway. Not that it meant much; stick a headless chicken in claret and blue and you’d get a pretty similar return.
The on-loan Fenerbahçe mega flop managed a pathetic zero goals from five Premier League starts and eight substitute appearances, and that just doesn’t make for very pleasant viewing.
Emenike returned to Turkey in the summer following his arrival, with West Ham understandably unwilling to offer him a permanent contract.
After another season in Istanbul, he left to join Greek giants Olympiacos for a reported £2.25million (as per Transfermarkt) before being shipped off to UD Las Palmas just six months later. Clearly unimpressed by his four goals in 10 games (which isn’t even that bad, though they did come in cup competitions) Emenike was released in the summer of 2018 and has since struggled to find a new club at the age of 32.
