The woes of Alfredo Morelos at Ibrox have been well documented this season. Indeed, whilst his goal return has been healthy, 17 bookings and three red cards is frankly unacceptable. The Colombian is walking a fine line, and should he leave (the Express have recently suggested he could) his perfect replacement has already been and gone as Pedro Caixinha sold Martyn Waghorn back in summer 2017.
Depressingly enough, Transfermarkt believe it only took £990k to prise him away from Ibrox.
Wherever Waghorn has gone, goals have been scored. The 29-year-old striker spent two seasons with Rangers, bagging 20 league goals in the Scottish Championship in his debut season before grabbing seven in the Premiership the following year. After that, though, Pedro Caixinha had seen enough and quickly brought in the aforementioned Morelos whilst allowing Waghorn to leave for Ipswich.
After two whole years, it seems that we’ve now come full circle, though, Steven Gerrard looks like he’s going to be ready to allow Morelos to leave the club and Waghorn would be a more than ideal replacement. However, Waghorn is now starring for Gerrard’s former England teammate Frank Lampard at Derby and could be set to become a hero in the play-offs in a matter of weeks.
Come August, Waghorn could be plying his trade in the Premier League if Lampard’s Derby can overcome Leeds United in the play-off semi-final and then enjoy some Wembley glory against either Aston Villa or West Brom. It won’t be easy, but Rangers fans know that their former hit-man has it in his locker to fire the Championship side into the top flight.
Striking options are always crucial to any team’s success, and if Gerrard can work on Morelos’ discipline then the pains of Waghorn’s success won’t be quite as severe. Until then, though, knowing that the best possible Morelos replacement left the club almost two years ago will be tough to stomach for the Gers, especially if Waghorn finds himself scoring goals in the Premier League come August.
