Manchester United signed Memphis Depay for £30.6 million (as per Transfermarkt) in 2015.
Supporters had high hopes for the Dutchman when he arrived at Old Trafford as he scored 50 goals and provided 29 assists in 124 appearances during his time at PSV Eindhoven prior to his move.
The exciting winger was given the No.7 shirt which automatically piled a lot of pressure on his shoulders after witnessing Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance.
Signed by Louis van Gaal, Depay started well but his form soon nosedived and he was omitted from the 18-man squad for the FA Cup final amid questions about his attitude. Indeed, Van Gaal and Ryan Giggs spoke to Depay on several occasions about the need to buckle down and keep a lower profile.
Surprisingly, Jose Mourinho was impressed with the way Depay handled being frozen out and his attitude in training but could offer the player few opportunities given the competition for places.
Sadly, the only thing he really offered on the field was skill and pace, which didn’t really get him anywhere as he had no end product, so he only had himself to blame.
Overall, his time at Manchester United was a forgetful one as he has since been labelled as a flop after producing just seven goals and six assists in 53 appearances for the Red Devils.
But, he’s reached new heights since leaving Manchester United as he’s transformed into one of Europe’s best wingers at current club Lyon, and he currently has more assists than Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford having produced an incredible 14, as well as adding eight goals.
