When Patrick Bamford joined Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea back in 2015, much was expected of him.
Following impressive stints in the Championship and League One with MK Dons and Middlesbrough, the 25-year-old was being tipped for a bright future at the summit of English football.
Bamford himself even spoke on more than one occasion about one day leading the line for Chelsea, showing the sort of confidence he had about making it to the top and staying there.
“That’s my dream, to pull on that blue shirt, so hopefully it’ll come true,” he told talkSPORT (via Goal).
“At a club like Chelsea they have the money to buy world-class strikers like Diego Costa and there’s also that pressure to win trophies, I just have to stick with it, be patient and hopefully my rewards will come.”
Bearing that in mind, Bamford’s loan move to Crystal Palace was huge. It gave the English striker the chance to develop and then prove he was ready to be a part of Chelsea’s first-team squad for the following campaign.
Unfortunately for Bamford, though, things did not exactly go to plan at Selhurst Park.
Under Alan Pardew, he made just six league appearances, all from the bench, in a loan spell he would go on to describe as “terrible” (BBC Sport).
Since then, Bamford has left Chelsea permanently and joined Leeds United to spearhead the Yorkshire club’s promotion charge.
And should Marcelo Bielsa’s men be able to go all the way, then Bamford might just finally be able to establish himself as a top Premier League centre-forward.
