There are always stories of players who have gone on to become world-class in their careers and a particular club can be left to regret not making a move for them when they had the chance. Enter Liverpool.
The Reds have had their fair share of superstars throughout their illustrious time as a club at Anfield, with a number of outstanding footballers having graced the turf.
Jurgen Klopp, who is certainly taking himself into legendary status at Liverpool with his management of the football club, has the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk currently in his line up and helping the team to finally try and bring the glory days back to Merseyside.
However, if one report back in 2011 is anything to go by, Liverpool may have truly missed out on a world-beater and for such a nominal fee!
The One That Got Away – Antoine Griezmann and Liverpool
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool had the chance to bring a certain Antoine Griezmann to Anfield back in the January transfer window of 2011 and were thought to even be edging close to a £7million deal with Real Sociedad for him.
Just £7m! That would have been one of the biggest steals in the history of football.
But as we all know, the Fenway Sports Group failed to make that happen and must seriously be regretting that they did not make the France international one of theirs when they had the chance to do so.
Now 28-years-old and valued at a cool £135m by Transfermarkt, Griezmann is a highly decorated footballer and has won a number of individual honours as well as helping Atletico Madrid to some major trophies during his time with the club.
Two third-place finishes on the Ballon d’Or podium (2016 and 2018), the France international can include lifting the World Cup with his country last summer in Russia and a Europa League title with his club in a long list of achievements.
Griezmann has recently revealed that he will leave Los Rojiblancos this summer (via a video on Twitter); however, it is extremely unlikely that Anfield will be where he is headed.
The former Real Sociedad man continues to be linked with a switch to Barcelona (BBC), and a move to the Camp Nou now looks all but certain.
Hindsight can sometimes be a wonderful thing, though FSG will not want to be reminded of the huge mistake they made in not signing Griezmann back in 2011.
