It has been a hard couple of years for Everton fans following Romelu Lukaku’s departure from the club.
Although the Toffees may have initially received a cool £75million (BBC) for the one-time prolific Belgian – because let’s face it, he is hardly that for Manchester United – the club has failed to invest it into a striker that is capable of achieving the same feats he once did at Goodison Park.
The likes of Sandro Ramirez, Cenk Tosun and even Theo Walcott (to some extent) have been used to fill the void Lukaku left to try and find the back of the net. They have tried and, subsequently, they have failed by some distance.
Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson are the only new attacking additions in that time to have helped really keep some of that goal threat within the team.
However, Ronald Koeman had the perfect chance to replace the outgoing Lukaku that summer but decided against a move. And, Everton fans must surely be furious he did not make one happen.
The One That Got Away – Ishak Belfodil And Everton
According to a report by the Guardian, Everton decided against signing Ishak Belfodil from Standard Liège as Koeman had reservations about bringing the Algerian to Goodison Park.
It is believed that the Dutch manager did not feel the then-24-year-old would improve his squad at all, whilst there were other concerns of a financial manner. But, with the way the club has been spending under Farhad Moshiri, and the money received from the Lukaku sale, that appears to be rather unbelievable.
Although he was playing in the Jupiler Pro League for Standard Liege (and we mean no disrespect to our Belgian friends), he still managed to record an impressive 17 goals that season.
Belfodil did eventually move on that summer though, with a loan move to Werder Bremen. Admittedly he did struggle a little bit with life in the Bundesliga at first, but a second season in Germany with Hoffenheim, with whom he is with on a permanent basis, could have not gone too much better for the Algerian.
And, by god has he taken the top-flight by storm this season! The 27-year-old has 15 goals in 24 appearances and has helped Hoffenheim to continue with their push for European football; having played in the Champions League earlier in the 18/19 campaign.
Everton are certainly the paying the price because Koeman’s gut was not in his favour and the fans at Goodison Park will have to hope that Marco Silva does not make the same mistake this summer as a striker will certainly be at the top of his transfer list.
Everton fans, how annoyed are you that Koeman did not sign Belfodil when he had the chance to do so? Let us know your thoughts below!
