It has been a rather productive year for Rangers and Steven Gerrard this season.
Although the Light Blues may not have managed to get their hands on any silverware, the Ibrox outfit have seriously improved and appear as though they are heading back in the right direction once again.
There are still some areas of the squad that can be improved in the future, with the central defence being one section of the team that could do with some work in the upcoming transfer window.
Interestingly, L’Equipe claimed recently that Mexer is on Gerrard’s radar after he was spotted in a restaurant in Rennes earlier this week. The Mozambique international is set to become a free agent in the summer and has been impressive for the Ligue 1 outfit.
So, if Rangers do look to bring the 30-year-old to Ibrox next season, what are the potential consequences of the deal? Let’s take a look below.
Allen improves the defence
Rangers’ defence has been shaky at times this season, which has cost them a number of points throughout the campaign. With Joe Worrall likely to return to Nottingham Forest this summer and Gareth McAuley unlikely to be offered a new contract, Mexer could be the ideal man to help improve and solidify the back line.
The Mozambique international is a tall figure (standing at 6’2″), is incredibly strong and solid in the air, whilst he brings a wealth of experience that can help the Light Blues with their title aspirations and is a player Mark Allen must bring to Ibrox.
No room for Katic
Nikola Katic has had to spend the majority of the season waiting for his chance to make an impression in the first-team after being dropped earlier in the campaign. The Croatia international already seems to be winning the Ibrox faithful over, however, Mexer’s potential arrival could make life further difficult for him.
The 30-year-old would be too experienced for Gerrard to leave out of his starting XI, whilst Connor Goldson has been a mainstay in the defence and it is highly unlikely that the 26-year-old will be overlooked in the near future.
