Profit Players: Hermann Hreidarsson was a brilliant servant for Portsmouth after signing for free

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Last week, we looked at Sylvain Distin’s move to Portsmouth as part of the Profit Players series, and his defensive partner Hermann Hreidarsson deserves his own entry due his longevity, despite the fact there wasn’t any physical profit made.

The Iceland international, who could play at left-back and centre-back, joined just two days after the Frenchman, with a clause in his contract allowing for a free departure from Charlton Athletic due to their relegation, as reported by The Guardian at the time.

During his five-year stay at Fratton Park, Hreidarsson went on to play a total of 123 games for Pompey, as per Transfermarkt.

The six of those that will be most remembered came during the FA Cup-winning campaign, as he played every minute as the club went on to lift the trophy, from the first against Ipswich Town to the last in the final against Cardiff City, with just one goal being conceded along the way.

The Icelandic defender did have his struggles with injury during his time at Fratton Park though, with the biggest of those being an Achilles tendon rupture in 2010.

Nevertheless, when he left Portsmouth as a 37-year-old, joining Coventry City for free, as reported by BBC Sport, he did so as a player who would be fondly remembered by those he was leaving behind, having been a great servant for the club and developed a real affinity with those who support it.

Recently appointed as part of Sol Campbell’s backroom staff at Southend United, he’ll now be plotting how to beat his former charges on Tuesday.

Portsmouth fans, how fondly do you remember Hreidarsson? Join the discussion by commenting below…
