Profit Players: Alfredo Morelos

Rangers supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their side record a third consecutive Scottish Premiership victory on Wednesday night.

Steven Gerrard’s men went into their encounter with Aberdeen at Pittodrie off the back of routine wins over St Mirren and Livingston in their preceding two league outings, thus remaining six points behind leaders Celtic in the race for the title. And that gap remains just that as the Gers recorded another victory on Wednesday night, with a brace from Alfredo Morelos as well as goals from James Tavernier and Jermain Defoe inspiring the visitors to a 4-2 success over Derek McInnes’ team, thus moving the Light Blues five points clear of the Dons.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Rangers fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be heaping praise on the efforts of striker Morelos on Wednesday, as although the Colombia international was again sent off against Aberdeen, his two goals helped steer the Gers towards another vital three points.

And with the 22-year-old costing the Scottish heavyweights a paltry £1.08 million (as per Transfermarkt) back in the summer of 2017, it’s a bargain deal from which Rangers are continuing to reap the rewards.

Ultimately, Morelos was one of several signings made by former manager Pedro Caixinha back in 2017, as the Portuguese boss sought to transform his Rangers squad into one that could bridge the gap towards the dominant Celtic.

And while plenty of his additions failed to have the desired effect, 22-year-old Morelos was certainly in the minority given he went on to bag 18 goals in all competitions for the Light Blues in the 2017/18 season, thus finishing as the club’s top-scorer alongside Josh Windass.

As such, the Colombian star, who earned his first call-up to the national squad in August 2018 such were his efforts for the Light Blues last term, had made quite a first impression in Scottish football, and he has taken it to another level this time round under Gerrard having already eclipsed his 18-goal tally from last season.

In fact, the 22-year-old’s brace at Pittodrie on Wednesday has taken his tally to 23 goals in all competitions this time round with 15 of those coming in the Scottish Premiership – quite simply, if Rangers are to go on and win the league this season, Morelos is the man to lead them to it.

Yes, another red card on Wednesday night, his third in successive matches against Aberdeen, does highlight a disciplinary issue that the 22-year-old doesn’t seem to be stamping out of his game, but on the whole there is no doubting that Rangers pulled off a masterstroke in landing the Colombian back in the summer of 2017.

And in doing so for a measly £1.08 million, and Morelos since then going on to net 41 times and lay on 18 assists in just 81 appearances for the Gers, it’s a bargain deal the Gers are continuing to reap the rewards from.
