Profit Players: Andrew Robertson - Profit Players

Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side continue their march towards a first Premier League title with victory at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday having seized the initiative in the title race with six straight league wins during December, with nearest rivals Manchester City losing on three occasions during that time. And the Reds remain seven points clear at the top of the division after sweeping aside Unai Emery’s Gunners 5-1 at the weekend, with a hat-trick from Roberto Firmino alongside strikes from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah inspiring Klopp’s side to a 17th win of the season.

As such, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about what their side could go on to achieve this season given just how impressive they were throughout 2018.

And one man who looks set to play a key part in what success they have is defender Andrew Robertson, who made the move to Merseyside back in the summer of 2017 for just £8.1 million (as per Transfermarkt) as Klopp sought much-needed reinforcements at left back.

And those much-needed reinforcements came about given the poor form of defender Alberto Moreno, who was signed by former Reds chief Brendan Rodgers in what proved to be a shocking call from the Northern Irishman, and one that has since prompted Klopp to land a Liverpool lynchpin in Robertson.

Ultimately, Spain international Moreno has seriously struggled to produce his best form throughout his time at Anfield, with the vast majority of his 140 appearances for the Reds coming under the stewardship of Rodgers, who lost his job back in October 2015 after a poor start to the 2015/16 season.

And while Klopp persevered with the 26-year-old for the rest of that season, a shocking start to the 2016/17 campaign saw midfielder James Milner come in at left back to underline just how lowly the Liverpool boss rated the Spaniard – that was the beginning of the end.

And while Milner did well down the left-hand-side, he was never the long-term solution, with Klopp eventually splashing out £8.1 million on Scotland international Robertson in a bid to plug a big void in his team.

And plug that void the defender certainly has given the ex-Hull City ace has been sensational for the Reds since breaking into the first team little over 12 months ago, appearing 54 times in all for Klopp’s side, 24 of which have come this term in their run to top spot in the Premier League table.

And with the Reds now significantly better defensively in only conceding eight goals in the league this term, the 24-year-old has certainly played a part in that revival, at the same time finally giving Klopp his long-term solution to the left back problem – a problem started by Spain international Moreno.

Thus, there is little doubting that Robertson has proven something of a saviour down the left-hand-side, with Rodgers’ shocking call to sign Moreno and his subsequent struggles prompting Klopp to spend shrewdly on luring the Scottish ace to Anfield in 2017.
