Nottingham Forest supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team get back to winning ways in emphatic fashion on New Year’s Day.
Aitor Karanka’s men went into their clash with Championship table-toppers Leeds United off the back of a disappointing run of no win in their previous five league games, the latest of which a 1-0 defeat at the hands of relegation-threatened Millwall at the Den. Yet the East Midlands giants responded brilliantly by sweeping aside the Whites 4-2 at the City Ground on Tuesday, with a brace from Jack Colback alongside strikes from Daryl Murphy and Ben Osborn inspiring the Reds to a ninth league win of the campaign, in turn moving them up to seventh place in the table.
As such, there have been many delighted Forest fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are hoping for even more from their side between now and the end of the campaign given the shrewd business their club conducted during the summer.
In fact, the club’s hierarchy were praised by many for some of the additions they brought to the City Ground during the close season, with the free signing of midfielder Claudio Yacob one that was widely lauded at the time of his arrival back at the start of September.
The 31-year-old was without a club after leaving West Brom at the end of last season, with his impressive efforts for Karanka’s Forest very much underlining the error the Baggies made in letting him leave, as well as the rewarding decision from the Forest manager to give him another chance in English football.
Yacob’s exit from the Hawthorns at the end of last season brought the curtain down on a reasonably successful six-year stint with West Brom, with the former Argentina international very much playing his part in helping establish the Baggies as a top-flight club once again.
Yes, he may well have struggled for regular football last term in appearing only 16 times in the Premier League for the Baggies, but following their relegation from the top tier alongside his evident ability in the middle of the park, he could well have been an asset to manager Darren Moore this time round in their quest for an immediate top-flight return.
Yet it was Karanka who took the bold step of giving Yacob a contract back in September last year, and what an inspired decision that is proving to be given the Argentine has since appeared nine times for the Reds in the Championship, all of which have come in their last 11 league matches to underline that he has got to grips with life at his new club.
And with several impressive displays in the heart of the Forest midfield, not least in showing great versatility to fill in in defence at times against Leeds on New Year’s Day, he looks set to be a huge asset to manager Karanka between now and the end of the season in his quest to lead Forest back to the Premier League.
Thus, it was something of a gamble for Karanka to take luring Yacob to the City Ground in September, but having done so for absolutely nothing and having got a great deal out of him already, his inspired call is very much showing West Brom the error of their ways.
