Profit Players: Daniel Candeias

Rangers supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their team return to the summit of the Scottish Premiership table on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s men went into their encounter with Hamilton at Ibrox looking to bounce back after bowing out of the Europa League at the hands of Rapid Vienna a few days earlier, eventually finishing third in Group G. Yet the Gers put their European disappointment behind them in edging past Hamilton 1-0 on Sunday, with Daniel Candeias’ early effort enough to seal all three points for the Light Blues, in turn moving them back to top spot in the Scottish Premiership table.

As such, there have been many delighted Rangers fans up and down the country in recent times, with winger Candeias likely receiving a lot of praise from supporters in netting the winner on Sunday to add to what has been a very encouraging season from the 30-year-old.

It was former manager Pedro Caixinha who lured the former Portugal youth international to Ibrox last year for a paltry £720,000 (as per Transfermarkt), with that rare moment of inspiration from the ex-Gers chief very much equipping the Light Blues with a lynchpin.

Ultimately, Caixinha’s one and only transfer window in charge of Rangers was eventful but not overly successful, with additions such as Fabio Cardoso, Eduardo Herrara, and Carlos Pena simply not working out at all for the Scottish giants – all three are currently out of the club either permanently or on loan.

And with several unconvincing performances under the Portuguese boss, most notably their embarrassing Europa League defeat to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn back in August 2017, there really weren’t many moments of inspiration under the 48-year-old – yet the addition of Candeias has proven to go against the grain.

Arguably, his arrival alongside that of Alfredo Morelos have proven to be the only bright sparks from Caixinha’s frankly disastrous reign at Ibrox, with 30-year-old Candeias proving to be a regular under the 48-year-old, Graeme Murty, and indeed new boss Gerrard – that itself says quite a lot.

The winger scored eight goals and laid on 13 assists in all competitions for the Gers last term in their run to third place in the Scottish Premiership, with the Portuguese star one of very few Rangers players who maintained a high-level of consistency throughout the season.

And he has continued his fine form into this campaign under Liverpool legend Gerrard, netting five goals and laying on four assists in 27 games for the Light Blues, four goals and two assists of which coming in their rise to top spot in the league.

Thus, not only was Candeias vital to the two previous managers he has played under at Rangers, he appears to be a lynchpin under Gerrard as well – his £720,000 price-tag is looking more and more like a bargain with every passing day.

And while Caixinha didn’t get a lot right during his time at Ibrox, there is no doubt he had a rare moment of inspiration in luring Candeias to the Scottish heavyweights.
