West Ham supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team record a second Premier League victory of the season at the weekend.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men went into their encounter with Manchester United off the back of drawing 0-0 with Chelsea in their previous league clash, and thus seeking to add to their solitary league win over Everton a few weeks earlier when Jose Mourinho’s side visited the London Stadium. And the Hammers produced a great display to sweep aside the Red Devils with goals from Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic, alongside a Victor Lindelof own goal, inspiring the hosts to a 3-1 success on Saturday, a result which moved them up to 14th place in the Premier League table.
As such, there have been many thrilled West Ham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are beginning to see the club’s big-money investment finally pay off having invested a great deal during the summer months.
And some Hammers supporters took a look even further back to previous business their side conducted, and while he may have left in very controversial and unceremonious circumstances back in 2017, there is little doubting that their club got their worth and much more from attacker Dimitri Payet.
The East London club spent £13.5 million (as per Transfermarkt) to lure the Frenchman away from Marseille back in 2015, as manager at the time Slaven Bilic sought to seriously improve his squad ahead of what would be their final season at Upton Park.
And 31-year-old Payet played as big a part as anyone in helping the club leave the ground on a high in netting 12 goals and laying on 15 assists in all competitions for the Hammers that season, helping Bilic’s men to a seventh place finish in the Premier League, and indeed the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
In fact, the France international was certainly one of the most influential attacking players in the division that season in helping the Hammers to their best league finish since 1999, and thus he was part of the reason for the huge amount of optimism at the club ahead of the move into the London Stadium in 2016.
Yet things turned sour that season with Payet refusing to play and wanting out of the club in the January transfer window, with many applauding manager Bilic for the way he dealt with the Frenchman during what seemed to be a very testing time.
And the Hammers eventually sanctioned his departure at the rear end of the January transfer window for £26.37 million (as per Transfermarkt), almost doubling their money on the 31-year-old less than 18 months on from his arrival, making a £12.87 million profit.
And such were the efforts of Payet during his time at the club, even if he left on bad terms back in January 2017, there is little doubting that the East London outfit got their worth and more from the attacking lynchpin.
