Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team bounce back by returning to winning ways in the Premier League over the weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s men went into their encounter with Southampton off the back of defeats at the hands of Leicester City and Crystal Palace in their previous two games, thus very much handing the initiative to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the title race. Yet the Citizens cut the gap to seven points on Sunday as goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero alongside a James Ward-Prowse own goal inspired the visitors to a 3-1 win over Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints, in turn clinching their 15th Premier League victory of the campaign.
Thus, there have been many delighted City fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping their side can bridge the gap to the Reds even further by beating Klopp’s side at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening.
And one man who will likely have a busy night against the rampant Reds is goalkeeper Ederson, who made the move to City back in the summer of 2017 as Guardiola sought to upgrade upon fellow shot-stopper Claudio Bravo, whom he signed just 12 months earlier for £16.2 million (as per Transfermarkt).
And while Ederson set the Citizens back a hefty £36 million (as per Transfermarkt), he has proven to be something of a saviour to very much give Guardiola a City gem, at the same time helping to forget the backfiring decision to bring Bravo to the Premier League.
Ultimately, the former Barcelona manager made clear his intentions to shake things up at the Etihad Stadium almost immediately by dropping Joe Hart down his goalkeeping pecking order, instead plumping for Chile international Bravo given his greater ability with the ball at his feet.
And while that was evident during his first season at the club, he simply hasn’t proven to be the shot-stopper needed given he also made several errors in the 2016/17 campaign, eventually leading to City finishing fourth in the Premier League table, in turn leading to Guardiola’s only trophy-less season in management.
And the 35-year-old’s struggles prompted Guardiola to admit his mistake by splashing out £36 million on Ederson back in the summer of 2017, which is proving to be a hugely inspired decision given just how big a part he played in their record-breaking title-winning campaign last time round.
The 25-year-old had excelled for Benfica prior to earning a move to the Etihad Stadium ahead of the 2017/18 season, and City certainly reaped the rewards from having an outstanding goalkeeper between the sticks last term in their run to 100 points from their 38 matches, shipping just 27 goals in that time – the fewest of any side in the division.
And while the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, and Raheem Sterling earned many rave reviews for their efforts in the attacking third of the pitch, just as important was the influence of Ederson further back, with the Brazilian making several important contributions over the course of the campaign as they lost just twice in the league in 2017/18.
And with the 25-year-old very much proving to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League at present, it’s clear just how big a saviour he has proven to be following his move back in 2017, with Guardiola’s backfiring decision to land Bravo prompting the City manager to go all-out to land the Brazilian, who in turn is proving to be a City gem.
