Profit Players: Georges-Kevin N’Koudou

Profit Players: Georges-Kevin N’Koudou

Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side keep their Champions League hopes alive with victory in midweek.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with Italian heavyweights Inter Milan needing all three points to remain in contention for a place in the last-16, having won just one of their preceding four Group B games. And the North Londoners did indeed get the precious three points as a Christian Eriksen strike in the second half sealed a 1-0 success for Spurs, leaving them with a chance of qualification ahead of their final group game against Barcelona later this month.

As such, there have been many thrilled Tottenham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are hoping for even better from their side as the season wears on despite failing to sign anyone during the summer transfer window.

In fact, the club’s hierarchy were criticised by many for their inactivity, which pales into contrast the relatively busy summer they embarked upon on in 2016, which included the signing of Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.

And while fellow 2016 arrivals Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko have proven their worth to Tottenham, the same simply cannot be said of £9.9 million arrival N’Koudou (as per Transfermarkt), with his addition a rare Pochettino blunder in what has otherwise been an exemplary Spurs tenure.

Ultimately, 23-year-old N’Koudou made the move to North London amid much excitement and anticipation after impressing at French side Marseille, netting ten goals and laying on five assists in his one and only season at the Ligue 1 giants, helping them to a 13th place finish in the league.

And given Pochettino’s proven track-record of developing and nurturing young talent, Spurs fans could be forgiven for thinking that N’Koudou would be the next to vastly improve under the Argentine – yet things simply haven’t worked out like that at all.

The winger mustered just 17 senior appearances in his first season at the club, of which only two were starts, to underline his lowly position in the pecking order, and things didn’t get much better last time round given he appeared just six times for Pochettino’s side, only one of which was a start.

And N’Koudou’s struggles were emphasised even further back in January of this year when he was shipped out on loan to fellow Premier League outfit Burnley, with the winger struggling there as well in making just eight league appearances for Sean Dyche’s men, failing to contribute either a goal or an assist in that time.

And with just 27 minutes of action for Tottenham this term, which came in their Carabao Cup win over West Ham back in October, N’Koudou’s future prospects at the North London outfit look very bleak indeed – that £9.9 million figure is looking more and more like a waste of money with every passing day.

And while Pochettino has on the whole shone throughout his time at Spurs, be it turning Tottenham into one of the best teams in the country or making shrewd additions in the transfer market, the addition of N’Koudou has proven to be a rare blunder in his otherwise exemplary reign of the club.
