Everton supporters have been pretty downbeat in recent times after seeing their side suffer a ninth Premier League defeat of the season at the weekend.
Marco Silva’s men went into their encounter with struggling Southampton off the back of returning to winning ways with victory over Bournemouth in their preceding league clash, and thus full of confidence ahead of the trip to St Mary’s on Saturday. Yet the Toffees made the journey back to the North East empty-handed as a James Ward-Prowse strike coupled with a Lucas Digne own goal inspired the hosts to a 2-1 success, thus leaving Everton in 11th place in the Premier League table.
As such, there have been many disappointed Evertonians up and down the country in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to improve courtesy of recent reports linking Idrissa Gueye with a big money move to Paris Saint-Germain this month.
The 29-year-old has been a stalwart in the Toffees midfield following his £7.65 million (as per Transfermarkt) move from Aston Villa back in 2016, with his consistently impressive displays in the heart of the Everton midfield very much making an absolute mockery of that paltry price-tag.
Ultimately, the Senegal international had shone in a woeful Villa side that lost their Premier League status in the 2015/16 season to thus earn a move to the blue half of Merseyside, as manager-at-time-time Ronald Koeman sought the reinforcements to take the Toffees up the table in what was the Dutchman’s first season in charge.
And they did just that with the aid of Gueye in eventually finishing seventh in the Premier League table and thus earning a spot in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League, with the midfielder very much going into Goodison Park and becoming a mainstay almost instantly with 33 league appearances that term.
And the 29-year-old’s combative and tenacious qualities were on show last time round as well as the Toffees laboured to an eighth place finish under a combination of Koeman and Sam Allardyce, with Gueye ending the season with a goal and an assist in his last three games to underline his growing improvement with the ball at his feet – after all, his off the ball skills have never been in doubt.
And Gueye has continued to dominate the midfield ranks at Everton this term under new boss Silva, appearing in all but three of their 23 Premier League games so far to help the Toffees to 11th place in the division – the partnership he struck up with Andre Gomes earlier this season suggested that Everton had finally solved that particular conundrum.
However, with Gueye reportedly linked with a move to PSG, and Gomes only on loan until the end of the season, Silva faces having to find yet another answer to his central midfield issues – the former in particular has been the main man in that area ever since leaving Villa.
In fact, Gueye has performed so well for the Toffees, appearing 94 times and netting four goals in the process, that he has made an absolute mockery of that £7.65 million price-tag.
