It’s rare you see a player make the jump from non-league to the professional level and make it look easy, but Jamal Lowe is one of those rare exceptions.
Signed from Hampton & Richmond Borough FC in the winter of 2017, Lowe was arriving as a promising name from the lower leagues of English football after helping the London-based club to promotion to the National League South in 2016, scoring 14 goals in 26 appearances for the side in that season and hitting 15 in 22 games the following campaign.
Despite joining midway through the season, Lowe had a sizeable impact on Portsmouth in his first five months at the club, scoring a brace against Notts Country in a win that secured Pompey’s promotion to League One, and since then the winger has developed into one of the most dangerous attackers in the division.
This season alone Lowe scored 15 goals and assisted nine as Pompey made it to the play-off semi-finals, and with 12 months remaining on his current deal, it is likely the 25-year-old attacker will be at the subject of interest from Championship clubs this summer.
Signed for an undisclosed fee, Portsmouth stand to make a huge profit on Lowe if they decide to cash in on their star attacker this summer, and after a season where promotion was missed out on by the closest of margins, the club might feel like a change of personnel is in order and decide to cash in on Lowe when interest is high.
Lowe’s story is one that only improves the reputation of signing players from non-league and the rewards club are in line to make if they take a gamble on an outstanding performer from below the Football League they will reap the benefits both on the pitch in terms of a star with a high goal output and potentially off it in the form of a high transfer fee.
Whether Lowe stays or goes is something that is yet to be decided by the player or club, but there is no doubt that the winger has been a sensation for the club since joining from obscurity, and that Portsmouth have benefitted greatly from his services.
Portsmouth fans, should the club sell Lowe this summer? Let us know!
