West Brom supporters have been pretty quiet in recent times after seeing their side fail to get back to winning ways in the Championship at the weekend.
Darren Moore’s men went into their encounter with Blackburn Rovers at the Hawthorns off the back of successive defeats at the hands of Wigan Athletic and Derby County in their preceding two games, and thus seeking a response against Tony Mowbray’s side on Saturday. And the Baggies took a first half lead against the Lancashire-based outfit through Craig Dawson, only for Harrison Reed to equalise 19 minutes from time to seal a 1-1 draw for the visitors, a result which saw West Brom slip to fifth place in the Championship table.
Thus, there have been many downbeat Baggies fans up and down the country in recent times, although there have been signs this term that they could well be challenging for promotion until the very end, especially given the form of striking duo Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez.
And with the latter making the move to the Hawthorns under former boss Tony Pulis for £12.33 million (as per Transfermarkt) little over 12 months ago, the now-Middlesbrough chief pulled off a masterstroke which looks set to hold the key to Moore’s promotion bid with West Brom this time round.
Ultimately, the one-time England international made the move to the Midlands outfit after falling down the pecking order at Southampton, what with ex-boss Pulis seeking to take the Baggies forward again after leading them to a tenth place finish in the Premier League the season before.
And a £12.33 million deal for Rodriguez was regarded by many as a shrewd addition and one that would help West Brom move forward, at the same time replacing fellow forwards Saido Berahino and Rickie Lambert, and the striker certainly did his bit in netting seven times as they lost their top-flight status.
Yet it now means that Moore has a very prolific and accomplished striker in his ranks for their push for Championship promotion this season, and Rodriguez has proven his worth so far with eight goals in 15 games for the Baggies, seven goals of which helping the Midlands outfit to victories.
And with fellow Championship tormentor Gayle alongside the 28-year-old, the duo look set to cause many an opposition backline problems this term in a bid to take West Brom back to the promised land.
Thus, while ex-boss Pulis brought Rodriguez in to take the club forward back in the summer of 2017, it has transpired that he now looks set to play a key part in what success Moore and West Brom have in the Championship this term.
