This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.
With all the superstars that Barcelona have had, and continue to produce, it is our job to highlight the unsung heroes at the Camp Nou and give them the credit they so richly deserve.
In the case of goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, his move from Borussia Monchengladbach back in 2014 for £10m has proved to be a huge bargain.
A pivotal figure in the Blaugrana’s first-team, the German shot-stopper has helped Barca win four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey’s, three Spanish Super Cups and one Champions League title during his five seasons in Catalonia (via Transfermarkt).
Indeed, the 27-year-old is frequently spoken about as one of the – if not THE – best goalkeeper in world football right now, with FourFourTwo naming the German as the third-best, behind Liverpool’s Alisson Becker and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.
It is clear to see why Ter Stegen is rated so highly among the widespread football community – his statistics speak for themselves. In 205 appearances for Barcelona (at the time of writing), the 27-year-old has kept 88 (eighty-eight) clean sheets; meaning that he has failed to concede a single goal in almost half of the matches that he has played for the Spanish champions.
For as long as Lionel Messi is at Barcelona, he will always hog the headlines – and deservedly so. However, it is players like Ter Stegen who really deserve honourable mentions for their discreet service to the cause.
Transfermarkt now value the Germany international at £81m – £71m more than he was purchased for just five years ago. Now that is one heck of a profit, wouldn’t you say?
