Finding a gem in the transfer market is something managers and scouts pride themselves in, and it’s even better when they come from a league rival.
And in Matty Pearson, his signing is something Mick Harford and his transfer committee can be proud of. The defender joined the Hatters for an undisclosed fee in the summer transfer window from Barnsley, and the 25-year-old centre-back has become quite the player.
Pearson has started every game for Luton this season and he has completed 90 minutes in all but one of those matches. During that time the defender has controlled the backline that has gone on to go top of the League One table and embark on a 28 game unbeaten run.
As well as being the main man in defence, Pearson has had a high tally of goals for himself for a defender. In 39 league games, the former Barnsley defender has six goals this season for Luton, the joint-highest scoring centre-back in the division along with Bradford City man Anthony O’Connor.
Pearson has been a superb signing for Luton this season, which is remarkable given the defender only made 17 league appearances for Barnsley last campaign.
Former Hatters manager Nathan Jones claimed that the club was following Pearson since his days at Accrington Stanley and that the defender had been a target of the club for quite some time.
Jones said to Luton’s official website: “We’ve tried to get Matty here ever since his Accrington days. He is a player we have thought a lot of, and one we thought would improve us in every year I’ve been at the football club.”
Jones’ words proved to be right, as Pearson has been worth every penny for Luton this season. He’s got a very bright future ahead of him, and he’s a player that is increasing in value with every passing week.
Luton fans, how impressed have you been with Pearson this season?
