It’s very rare you see a player come from one of the home nations and impress in their debut season, but Ronan Curtis has done that and then some.
The summer signing from Derry City has been one of the best players in League One this season, scoring 11 goals for Pompey and assisting another 12, an incredible record for a player few in English football had heard about before Portsmouth introduced the winger to the world.
Curtis’ success in England is one of many uplifting stories for Portsmouth this season. The 22-year-old Irish international’s rise to stardom in League One is so surprising and rapid that Transfermarkt doesn’t even have a value for him yet.
Portsmouth currently sits in third place in the League One table, four points off the automatic promotion spot with Sunderland breathing down their neck a point behind them in fourth place with two games in hand.
The two sides meet each other in the EFL Trophy final this upcoming weekend, however Curtis could be missing from the final at Wembley due to a gruesome injury that saw the Irish winger lose a part of his finger after it was slammed in his front door, keeping the Pompey star out of action for two weeks.
Pompey go into their first trip to Wembley since their famous 2008 FA Cup final win the favourites, with league and EFL Trophy form favouring Kenny Jackett’s side to lift the trophy this weekend, but whether they’ll win or not could be down to whether or not Curtis plays or not.
The Irish international has experience playing in big games for his former club Derry, playing for them in the Europa League, and his experience in the big occasions could be what leads Portsmouth to glory at the home of football.
Curtis has without doubt been Portsmouth’s best player this season, let alone their best signing, and it won’t be a surprise to see big teams in the summer enquire about his services when the transfer window opens in a few months time.
Portsmouth fans, how far can Curtis take Pompey this season?
