‘He was absolutely outstanding’ – John Motson says Arsenal player was the weekend’s star man
Legendary football commentator John Motson thinks new Arsenal signing Dani Ceballos has lifted hopes of the Gunners having a successful season after the Spaniard made an impressive full debut at the Emirates Stadium.
Ceballos made a substitute appearance away at Newcastle United on the opening weekend, but in starting from the off against Burnley, he received plaudits from the likes of Motson as he produced two assists for both of the Gunners’ goals on Saturday lunchtime.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Motson spoke highly of Ceballos after pinpointing the midfielder as the player who impressed him the most over the weekend.
He said: “The player who caught my eye over the weekend was definitely Ceballos. I think he’s replacing Aaron Ramsey in the Arsenal team and I thought he was absolutely outstanding.
“He can play as the anchor, play in deep midfield, take people on, score goals, make goals. I must say, Arsenal’s prospective season has brightened up with his signing.”
Ceballos’ performance put him on a par with the likes of past Arsenal midfielders in becoming the third Gunners player to register two or more assists on their first Premier League start – following in the footsteps of Ray Parlour and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Spaniard also boasted a 90% pass success rate – although this was rivalled by his midfield partners Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock, who registered values of 94.7% and 87.5% respectively over the 90 minutes.
So there could be justification for Motson’s positivity with regards to the season ahead for Arsenal, with new arrival Ceballos threatening to become an integral part of the Gunners midfield this season on the basis of his standout performance on Saturday.
But with the campaign only two games old, and top-six rivals Liverpool and Spurs on the immediate horizon for Arsenal, perhaps we should hold fire before passing comment about the Gunners’ potential for the season ahead.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
