Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes Mesut Ozil’s latest omission from the Gunners squad could signal that the end is near for the German in North London.
Ozil was left out of the Arsenal matchday squad that faced Manchester United on Monday evening and Parlour questioned the decision of Emery to leave the World Cup winner at home.
The 30-year-old has only made two appearances for the Gunners this term, with showings at Watford and at home to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup.
Unable to find a reason for Ozil’s latest absence from the playing field, Parlour implied that the German could soon be seeking a way out after being shunned once again.
Speaking after Arsenal’s draw with Manchester United, he told TalkSPORT: “We don’t know what happens behind the scenes, we don’t know the atmosphere at training and we don’t know his attitude at training.
“Maybe Emery is looking at it wanting a reaction and he’s not getting a reaction, so he’s saying ‘I’m going to go with the youngsters instead’.
“He’s been brave by doing it because Ozil is a World Cup winner and he’s on a massive contract at Arsenal.
“But he did probably need someone like Ozil last night to open the door for [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang – he didn’t get a lot of service, did he?
“I don’t know what the future holds for him. I think that could be the last straw.”
Ozil’s inability to force his way into the manager’s plans seems perplexing from the outset, especially given that he has ‘leader’ status amongst the squad, as a result of Arsenal’s captains being announced last week.
With the German otherwise available for selection, the fact that the team’s best-paid player cannot even warrant a place on the bench suggests that something is amiss.
It doesn’t appear to be a question of rotation, either, with Emery seemingly suggesting his place in their Europa League clash with Standard Liege was not assured, although he appeared to shrug off suggestions Ozil could be loaned out in the winter, as was rumoured in recent days.
However, just as Parlour admits, it seems that it is anyone’s guess where Ozil’s future lies.
