Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton claims that ex-teammate Jack Grealish will be disappointed with how he’s begun the campaign (via Football Insider).
The 24-year-old was deemed to be one of the hottest young prospects in English football last season, as he helped his boyhood club earn promotion to the top flight by scoring six goals and registering eight assists.
This season, however, Grealish has begun life in the Premier League slowly, notching just one assist in his opening five matches for the Villans.
He is yet to find the back of the net this term, and put in a below-par performance for his side during Monday night’s goalless draw with West Ham United – something highlighted by his manager Dean Smith after the game.
Hutton believes that his former colleague will also be disappointed with his return so far this season, but believes that it is down to him adjusting to the Premier League.
“Yeah, if you look over the season so far, I know it’s only five games but he probably would have wanted to give more,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“It’s an adjustment period for him and last season he was outstanding, he was the best player by a mile, this is a step up, he is still a young boy.
“He’s a captain now, so obviously there’ll be pressure on him to perform, I think it’s just about him adjusting to this league and building on that.”
Grealish is obviously a player of quality, but the fact that he is now captain and has such an important role to play for Villa could mean that his performances will be scrutinised if he doesn’t affect the game in some way each time he takes to the pitch.
Football is a confidence game, though, and as Hutton touched on, adjusting to the demands of the Premier League will take time.
Once he fully adapts to his new surroundings, and opens his account for the season, it shouldn’t be too long before he once again starts to find the same form he demonstrated last term in the Championship.
