‘A reliable sort’ – Andy Townsend tips Chelsea defender to profit from Luiz departure
Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend has backed Blues centre-back, Andreas Christensen, to become a major beneficiary of David Luiz’s departure to Arsenal.
With Chelsea unable to replace any outgoings until next summer due to their transfer ban, replacements for Luiz will have to come from within – and Townsend has pinpointed Christensen as the man to step up in the Brazilian’s absence.
Luiz’s second stint as a Chelsea player came to an end during the climax of the transfer window – which could free up a place in the defence for the Dane – with the potential to succeed a player who featured 50 times across all competitions last year.
Speaking to Sky Sports prior to Luiz’s move, he said (via Football.london): “Maybe Frank [Lampard] has different ideas, maybe he’s going to put more faith in [Andreas] Christensen and other young players and maybe David Luiz feels his time at Chelsea is coming to a bit of a natural close.
“I like him, he seems a character, always seemed a reliable sort.”
23-year-old Christensen only got a handful of opportunities in the league last year but started all of Chelsea’s matches in their run towards Europa League glory last May.
However, there still remains a wealth of options at centre-back for Chelsea despite their inability to bring in reinforcements before the start of the season – although due to Antonio Rudiger’s injury and Luiz’s switch to North London, even with the competition of Kurt Zouma (who hasn’t featured at Stamford Bridge since 2017) or perhaps first-choice right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, Christensen could enter the new season as one of the team’s more experienced centre-backs.
Therefore, Lampard may have little choice other than to put more faith in the Denmark international, with options set to be limited for the duration of the new manager’s first season in charge at Chelsea.
