Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has lauded Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi for his performance that eventually saw off Newcastle United in Saturday’s Premier League clash.
Hudson-Odoi set up Marcos Alonso’s winner as the Blues entered the top four with a hard-fought victory over Shearer’s former club.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer singled out the youngster after helping Chelsea towards a fifth successive win in all competitions.
He said (via the Daily Star): “Three Premier League appearances this season for Callum Hudson-Odoi and three assists.
“Of course, he had a terrible injury as well that he has come back from.
“He is just 18 years old and can spray the ball around brilliantly, he is full of confidence.
“He can go left, right, outside or inside and everything Chelsea did today, he was at the heart of it.
“He was hugging the touchline, and with his pace and drive, he makes it very difficult for defenders.
“What a week it has been for him with two goals for England Under-21s as well, what a talent.”
It has been a superb start to the season for Hudson-Odoi – particularly considering he has only recently made his first-team comeback after spending a lengthy period of time out through injury.
His match-winning assist kept up his sparkling form, with the teenager assisting in each of Chelsea’s last three Premier League games – as well as in their Champions League win over Lille.
In scoring himself during Chelsea’s 7-1 victory over Grimsby Town, Hudson-Odoi has directly contributed in each of his senior club appearances this season.
So it is easy to see why Shearer has been so complimentary towards the player, with the 18-year-old hitting the ground running under Frank Lampard as he looks to stake a claim for a more regular role in the Chelsea lineup.
