BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has named Chelsea’s Jorginho in his Team of the Week – with the Italian’s exceptional assist and impact against Watford giving him a place in the XI ahead of teammates Mateo Kovacic and Willian.
Chelsea’s midfield was highly praised as Frank Lampard’s side made it five Premier League wins on the bounce – with Jamie Redknapp highlighting the effectiveness of the defensive-midfield combination of Jorginho and Kovacic while covering the game for Sky Sports.
Crooks followed that up by singling out the Italy midfielder altogether – labelling his pass to set up Tammy Abraham for the game’s opener as ‘out of this world’.
He said: “The ball from Jorginho for Tammy Abraham to score against Watford was out of this world. It was a move that doesn’t just happen by accident; this was [a] phase of play that has been worked on and orchestrated by the coaching staff and players, and it was wonderful to watch.
“Last week it was Mateo Kovacic who made my TOTW at the expense of Jorginho, but the Italian made such an impact against the Hornets that I felt compelled to select him above Kovacic and fellow midfielder Willian, such was his performance.”
While Kovacic’s input was ignored as his teammate got the nod this time around, the Croat may consider himself unlucky not to be named for a second successive week by Crooks.
Although Jorginho got the vital assist to give Chelsea a perfect start, Kovacic was once again remarkably consistent as a passer – and unlike last week against Burnley, topped Jorginho’s pass percentage from a higher number of attempts, according to WhoScored.
There may not have been much room for both of them in the team following the goalscoring exploits of Sheffield United’s John Lundstram and Jonjo Shelvey, but it seems one moment of brilliance has usurped Kovacic’s overall impressive performance.
That is not to take anything away from Jorginho, nor is it to suggest that Kovacic will have any sleepless nights after being snubbed by Garth Crooks – but the bottom line seems to be that Chelsea are very much on the up after their latest win.
