Chelsea: Sam Allardyce blasts Blues performance against Manchester United

‘They’ve fallen apart’ – Sam Allardyce blasts Chelsea collapse against Manchester United

Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has slammed Chelsea’s performance against Manchester United at the weekend as the Blues endured a disastrous start to Frank Lampard’s reign as manager.

Chelsea were decisively downed by United despite some promising moments in their curtain-raiser at Old Trafford – striking the woodwork twice in the opening half – though had nothing to show for their efforts.

But they were very much the architects of their own downfall as Kurt Zouma’s clumsy challenge in the box on Marcus Rashford began Chelsea’s demise as a wave of second-half strikes destroyed any hope of getting off on the right foot under Lampard.

Allardyce felt that the away side’s approach was all wrong, and laid into the team after their heavy defeat.

He told TalkSPORT: “Manchester United have not played as well as Chelsea over the 90 minutes but look at the result.

“You crumbled, you went to pieces, you lost your shape, you lost your discipline and you did something that no one should do and that’s chase the game.

“You ultimately fail when you chase anything. You chase, you chase, you fail. You play your way back into the game, you keep your discipline.

“You’ve been in control of the ball for most of the game and now they’ve fallen apart and actually just let Manchester United do what they want.”

The stats (and Allardyce himself) suggest Chelsea were well in the game on Sunday despite the one-sided scoreline – with the Blues having more possession as well as more shots on goal, even boasting a higher pass accuracy rate than their opponents – who were far more economical with their opportunities with four goals from five efforts on target.

So for all of the endeavour they displayed, Chelsea’s defensive lapses could point towards what Lampard will have to work on before their Super Cup meeting with Liverpool in midweek – especially with the Champions League winners showcasing their own taste for goals at this early stage of the season.
