Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been impressed with the impact Tyler Roberts has been making in recent games.
The Welsh international has struggled for game time under Marcelo Bielsa this season, indeed he has been limited to five substitute appearances and has played for just 106 minutes so far (via Transfermarkt).
However, his five cameos from the bench have been in the Whites’ last six Championship fixtures, and Whelan believes that he has shown enough to suggest that he has something to offer the team going forward.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “Now you’ve got Tyler Roberts who I think has been looking fantastic in that position, he poses a different kind of threat, he has a little more pace about him, he is great with the ball at his feet and he defends more.”
Whelan definitely has a point, Roberts is a very different option to Mateusz Klich, who has been playing the attacking-midfield role which the Welshman would occupy were he to start.
Last season he scored three goals and provided six assists despite making just 28 Championship appearances (Transfermarkt), and with him still being just 20 years old he could improve further still.
Leeds have been struggling in front of goal this season, and are currently the lowest scorers of the top nine in the second tier (via BBC Sport). Added to that, Klich is out of form at the moment and has failed to register a goal or an assist in his last seven appearances (Transfermarkt).
Perhaps giving Roberts a start and resting Klich could give the Whites a new lease of life up front, and potentially lead to a few more goals in upcoming games.
