Former Manchester City midfielder Trevor Sinclair believes that the title race is still on – despite the champions dropping nine points behind leaders Liverpool after being beaten by the Reds at Anfield.
An early Liverpool double set the tone on a frustrating afternoon for City, with Pep Guardiola clearly agitated as his team did not receive the assistance from video technology he felt his side had warranted.
But despite City falling even further off the pace, Sinclair retains a hope that Liverpool can drop points – and allow the chasing pack back into what is looking like a one-horse race.
Speaking to TalkSPORT on the reasons fourth-placed City still have a chance, he said: “One, you’ve got an unbelievable squad at Manchester City, but not only that, I actually still feel the weight of the players that Liverpool have got in [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino and [Mohamed] Salah – if you get one of them or two of them injured for a decent period of time, they’re not the same team – and that’s where they can drop points.”
Will Liverpool win the Premier League title this season?
It is not too surprising that Sinclair was a minority in the TalkSPORT studio, with fellow guest Mario Melchiot less than upbeat about his own former side’s chances, despite Chelsea now among Liverpool’s closest challengers.
However, there is an argument to say Sinclair could be onto something. City’s strength in depth helped massively last season, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne missing lengthy periods through injury as they wrapped up a treble, anyway.
Having said that, City have also demonstrated this season that injuries can change teams – especially when they pile up – with their defence decimated by setbacks which have seen them lose on three occasions in the meantime.
There seems to be no reason a similar effect could not happen at Liverpool, although the Reds did demonstrate their own strength in depth by overcoming Barcelona last term without the help of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
While having key players miss out over an extended period would be a different test altogether, it says a lot about Liverpool’s title credentials that Sinclair is essentially yearning for injuries to reignite City’s own challenge.
