Liverpool: James Milner deserves new Reds deal, says Danny Mills

Former Premier League footballer Danny Mills has urged Liverpool to tie James Milner down to a new contract.

The 33-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, and Mills believes it is paramount that the Reds retain the midfielder’s services given his calibre and experience.

Now in his fifth season at Anfield, Milner is one of the most experienced players in the Liverpool squad – only goalkeeping stand-in Andy Lonergan is older.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills feels that Milner’s professionalism makes him a role model for other players – and is therefore an asset worth keeping hold of.

He said: “Without a shadow of a doubt [Milner deserves a new deal]. Look at the influence Vincent Kompany had at Manchester City and they’ve now lost that.

“Milner gives you quality, can play in every single position, probably the fittest man at the football club, that dedication that he’s got, that attitude, he’ll pass it on to the young players as well. He’s a great example for the manager to say: ‘This is what you need to be doing.’

“Why would you not want to keep a player of that calibre around, even if it’s in a capacity where he’s not going to play much? If he’s happy to stay there, I would sign him up immediately.”

With just three starts from Liverpool’s opening seven games, it may seem as though Milner’s role at Liverpool is becoming less vital to the side – though he only started half of their league outings last year despite a rather modest return of seven goals and assists in all competitions.

It could be said that Liverpool have nothing to lose in opting to keep Milner at the club, with the midfielder a reliable penalty taker (missing just two out of 18 spot-kicks for Liverpool) and an individual with experience of winning the Premier League, which Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently in pole position to achieve this season.

And with Milner entrusted with the captain’s armband at times over the last few years, Mills is clearly not the only one that views him as a model professional who Liverpool have every reason to keep on board.
