‘Could be one of the best players in the league’ – Ex-Liverpool player backs Reds star to shine
Former Liverpool player Dean Saunders thinks Naby Keita has what it takes to become one of the Premier League’s best players.
Discussing Liverpool’s midfield on talkSPORT, Saunders responded to calls for the club to buy a central midfielder who could double up as a goalscoring threat – but suggested such a move would be incompatible with Liverpool’s current tactical system under Jurgen Klopp.
Highlighting the current options in the middle of the park for the Reds, Saunders sounded out Keita as having the potential to excel following his first season in English football.
“Liverpool’s formula with the front three seems to work with both full-backs bombing on all the time because they’ve got a workmanlike midfield,” Saunders said. “So [James] Milner, a good pro; [Jordan] Henderson, good pro; [Georginio] Wijnaldum; Fabinho – and Keita, who looked to me as if he could be one of the best players in the league in the future.
“He’s had a few injuries, shown flashes of brilliance, but I’m hoping this season that he can kick on now.”
His so-called ‘flashes of brilliance’ may refer to the way he has eased into life at Anfield – with all his goals in a Liverpool shirt coming in April as he finished the season on a high from a goalscoring perspective before succumbing to groin trouble.
So should he pick up where he left off, Liverpool could already have a goalscorer in the midfield at the club after all – which Keita has suggested is part of his repertoire during his spells in Germany and Austria – and Saunders could well be on to something.Like what the TT have on offer?
