Liverpool: Ray Houghton surprised by lack of new arrivals at Anfield

‘I’m slightly surprised’ – Former Liverpool midfielder surprised at lack of transfer activity

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton has been left surprised as Jurgen Klopp’s side have not added a big-name signing to their playing roster this summer.

The Reds have only brought in youngsters Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott during the transfer window – while the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Simon Mignolet have been let go, leaving Liverpool, with Adrian joining the Reds earlier on today with fewer options in various areas of the team.

Houghton has expressed his disbelief at their transfer activity, telling talkSPORT: “I don’t know the reason behind it. I think the manager has been brilliant in previous seasons because he has got them in really early.

“I remember when Mane first came in from Southampton – I did one of the pre-season games and the manager was constantly on the sidelines getting back into position and he did it two seasons ago with Salah and he didn’t really know what was going on.

“So he’s always went out there and brought in the right player at the right time, just this time around I’m slightly surprised Liverpool haven’t gone out there and brought in one or two more additions just to improve the squad.”

With the outgoings that have occurred at the club in the off-season, Houghton’s concerns are fairly understandable as Liverpool seem to be passing up the opportunity of using their re-found status as European champions to lure big names to Anfield.

But Houghton may well have alluded to the potential reason as to why that has happened; perhaps Klopp feels that this is not the right time to change things, having built a side capable of conquering the continent.

It may be a case of ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it’ for the Liverpool boss following a Champions League triumph and a 97-point haul in the Premier League, although the departures in reserve may carry an element of risk with an entire season on the horizon.

So there may be logic in keeping Liverpool’s starting XI intact – although their failure to add supplements to their squad could see them praying for an injury-free campaign.
