Manchester United: Christian Eriksen would be ‘ideal fit’ at Old Trafford, says Stewart Robson

‘An ideal fit for Manchester United’ – Pundit thinks 27 y/o would be fine Old Trafford addition

ESPN FC pundit Stewart Robson believes that Christian Eriksen would be a good signing for Manchester United, amid reports the Red Devils were interested in signing the Denmark international from Spurs.

United have since been thought to have ended their pursuit of the midfielder due to the club being of the opinion that the 27-year-old has his sights set on Real Madrid.

Robson believes that a partnership with Paul Pogba would benefit the United midfield, while Spurs would not necessarily lose out should they part ways with the Dane, with Tottenham reportedly coming to an agreement over a fee for Juventus’ Paulo Dybala.

Robson said: “[Eriksen] has put in some very good performances week in, week out – but if you talk to Spurs fans and you talk to people around the club, they would be quite happy to get a big, sizeable chunk of money for him because they don’t think he plays in some of the big games. When they play against the big teams, he goes missing sometimes when they have to do the defensive side of the game as well.

“I don’t think it’s a bad loss for Tottenham if they can get someone like Dybala, and I think it would be an ideal fit for Manchester United, because he’s a good passer of the ball – if Pogba stays, they can work well in midfield – so I think it works for both teams.”

Although Eriksen performed in a side that finished two places above United in the league last season, his numbers from the previous year suggest he could well supply the United midfield with added creativity.

Compared to Juan Mata – a potential rival in attacking midfield should Eriksen make a switch – the Spurs man made 2.1 key passes per game in the league to Mata’s 1.4 (as per WhoScored) – while Eriksen bettered the Spaniard’s assist tally by 10, with his total of 12 in all competitions better than anyone in Manchester United’s squad last season.

So provided Spurs can find a replacement – and something dramatic happens in the coming hours – Eriksen could be well on his way to becoming an Old Trafford success.
