‘You can see it happening’ – Pundit tips Manchester United to make January move for 20 y/o
Former Premier League footballer Noel Whelan believes Manchester United could plot a move for West Ham United’s Declan Rice in the January transfer window.
Whelan thinks he will attract the likes of the Premier League’s stronger clubs, and believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be planning a move for the defensive midfielder in the winter.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “West Ham have got a really special player on their hands. They will struggle to hold on to him, because the big clubs will be hot on his trail.
“I think Declan Rice could be the next player who goes for a Premier League record fee. We have just seen Harry Maguire go for £80m and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rice goes for more than that, above £90m, even.
“He’s young, English, hugely talented and is such a long way from his peak. You look at a team like Manchester United, who need a midfield anchorman and you can see it happening.
“They don’t mind paying over the odds for a player, as we saw in the summer. I could see them looking to get Rice in January.”
Rice may be in for a bright future, having secured a place in the England team at 20 years of age. Though Whelan’s logic could be questionable by citing the case of Harry Maguire – surely the fact that United splashed out on the centre-back in record-breaking fashion decreases the chances of them outlaying a similar sum on Rice so soon?
Given United were initially knocked back from lesser offers for Maguire, by eventually having to fork out £80m for the 26-year-old, it hardly creates a sense that United would be willing to literally double up on bolstering their defensive ranks – despite their stuttering start to the new Premier League campaign.
