Manchester United: Red Devils urged to buy Philippe Coutinho

‘Manchester United have to make this happen’ – Pundit urges club to buy 27 y/o winger

TalkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham thinks Philippe Coutinho is a must-buy for Manchester United at this late stage of the transfer window – naming the Red Devils as the side most in need of the Brazilian amid talk of a host of Premier League clubs hunting his signature.

Coutinho has been linked with a Premier League return, with as many as four clubs from the English top-flight in the running to sign the Barcelona winger, who has failed to nail down a starting position for the Spanish champions, starting just 22 of their league games last season.

Sources at TalkSPORT believe Arsenal, Spurs and former club Liverpool are rivalling United to bring in Coutinho– but out of the willing candidates, Durham feels there is one team that requires his services the most.

Durham said: “It makes no sense for Arsenal to get him because they need to strengthen other areas of the team. If Eriksen is going to go to Manchester United, then it makes sense for Spurs to get him.

“But for me, the club with the biggest need for Coutinho is Manchester United. They absolutely need some quality in all areas of the pitch, and he fills that brief. Surely Manchester United have to make this happen.”

Putting a finger on why Coutinho could be close to the exit door at Barcelona, as the reports suggest, may be a tricky task – as his input to their season last year seemed to halt something of an upward trajectory which he was enjoying at Liverpool in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old’s prowess as a goalscoring winger was really developing at Anfield, notching well into double figures for the club in both seasons prior to his Camp Nou switch – and even achieved the feat for both clubs in the same year either side of his January move in 2017/18 – but scored just five league goals last season.

While the reports imply Barcelona are willing to sell, Coutinho could certainly provide United with an experienced and proven Premier League talent, while his would-be competition at Old Trafford in Alexis Sanchez continues to falter in front of goal since his move from Arsenal around the same time Coutinho left for Spain.

Therefore, Coutinho could easily stake a claim to get into the United XI – and pick up where he left off at rivals Liverpool.
