Watford supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their team return to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday.
Javi Gracia’s men went into their encounter with newly-promoted and high-flying Wolves off the back of a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth just prior to the international break, and thus seeking a response at Molineux on Saturday. And Hornets supporters got exactly that as goals from Etienne Capoue and Roberto Pereyra sealed a deserved 2-0 success for the Hertfordshire-based outfit, a win which moved them above Nuno Espirito Santo’s men into seventh place in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Watford fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent comments from Jamie Redknapp for The Daily Mail, in which he makes the huge claim that Abdoulaye Doucoure is the ‘most under-rated midfielder’ in the Premier League.
And given what the Hornets ace can deliver both on and indeed off the ball, it’s difficult to disagree with Redknapp’s verdict on the 25-year-old Frenchman.
Ultimately, Doucoure made the move to Vicarage Road back in 2016 as a relative unknown after coming up through the ranks and beginning his senior career at Rennes, but he has since gone from strength to strength in the heart of the Watford midfield to become one of the club’s most important players.
The former France youth international has eight goals and eight assists to show for his 72 senior appearances for the Hornets, but it was last season and indeed the early phase of this campaign which has underlined the midfielder as one of the most influential in the division, and indeed the most ‘under-rated’ as per Redknapp.
Doucoure bagged seven times and laid on four assists to help Gracia’s men finish 14th in the Premier League last season, thus earning him the club’s Player of the Season award, while he already has four assists to his name this time round in just nine league appearances to again demonstrate his capabilities on the ball.
And with two assists at Molineux at the weekend, the 25-year-old played as big a part as anyone in helping the Hornets to all three points, but it’s not just on the ball in which he is hugely effective, it’s also off it as well in getting around the pitch and providing the ideal protection in front of the back four.
Doucoure is excellent in the tackle but also reads the game very well to consistently get into the right positions to affect play, and having played in both a defensive and indeed a more attacking midfield role this term, it’s clear that he has everything in his locker to succeed in that department.
And having proven his worth to Watford in the last 12 months or so, to the point that some of the country’s top sides have reportedly expressed an interest in the midfielder, it’s difficult to disagree with Redknapp’s claim that he is indeed the ‘most under-rated midfielder’ in the English top-flight.
