Pundit’s Choice: Alisson

Pundit’s Choice: Alisson

Liverpool supporters have been pretty satisfied in recent times after seeing their team record an eighth Premier League victory of the season at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with lowly Cardiff City off the back of picking up 23 points from a possible 27 to start the new season, thus sitting level on points with Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League table. And the Reds made it eight wins from ten on Saturday as a brace from Sadio Mane alongside strikes from Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri inspired the hosts to a 4-1 win at Anfield, although City reclaimed top spot 48 hours later in beating Tottenham at Wembley.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be interested in recent comments from Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas, who rates goalkeeper Alisson as the best signing of the season so far.

And while the ex-Arsenal man admitted that he maybe hasn’t been the ‘best-performing signing’ so far, he is spot on to suggest that ‘it’s about more than that’, chiefly the impact he has had on a Liverpool backline that were vulnerable for much of last season.

Ultimately, the display of Loris Karius in the Champions League final back in May underlined Liverpool’s need for a better and more accomplished goalkeeper, as although the German had done well in the second half of the season, his efforts in Kiev proved that he simply couldn’t be relied upon to make the difference on the big stage.

And while the arrival of Virgil van Dijk back in January certainly helped solidify Klopp’s defence, there remained question marks surrounding the goalkeeping situation, with neither Karius nor Simon Mignolet of the level required to take the Reds towards the title.

And that is why Nicholas is spot on to underline what Alisson’s addition meant to Liverpool, as the Reds finally have a goalkeeper they can trust and who has performed at the highest level between the sticks.

The Brazil international kept Manchester City’s Ederson out of the national team during the World Cup to underline just how highly-rated he was, which was also evidenced during his time at Italian giants Roma given he conceded just 66 goals in 64 games for the club.

And he has already proven his worth to the Merseysiders this season as, despite making an error against Leicester City back in September, he has made some key saves to help the Reds make an unbeaten start to the new season.

And as Nicholas rightly points out, having someone reliable like Alisson behind them can only be a good thing for the Liverpool defenders, as they may now be in a position of comfort knowing that there is a goalkeeper who has great command of his box and sweeps up well just behind them – that simply wasn’t the case with Karius.

Ultimately, it was widely believed that Liverpool needed to sign a world-class goalkeeper during the summer to take the next step towards title contenders, and they certainly did just that in luring Alisson from Roma.

And given they are level on points with Pep Guardiola’s City, whereas at this stage last season they were sixth in the Premier League table, Nicholas is spot on with his assessment of the Brazilian star as the signing of the season so far.
