Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side record a ninth Premier League victory of the season at the weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with basement side Fulham off the back of drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in their preceding league clash, thus falling two points behind early leaders Manchester City. And the gap remains at two points as goals from Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri inspired the Reds to a routine 2-0 success over the Cottagers at Anfield on Sunday, although City’s win over neighbours Manchester United later in the day saw them reclaim their place at the summit.
Nevertheless, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be interested in recent comments from Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills, who has named left back Andrew Robertson in his Team of the Week.
And with the ex-City defender backing up his selection by stating that the Scotland international ‘seems to get better week in, week out’, he is absolutely right to lavish praise on the ever-improving Reds lynchpin.
Ultimately, Robertson made the move to Anfield back in the summer of 2017 following Hull City’s relegation from the Premier League, although he and Harry Maguire were perhaps the brightest sparks of an otherwise disastrous season for the Tigers, hence they have gone from strength to strength since leaving the club.
Nonetheless, there were a few eyebrows raised at the 24-year-old’s addition given it maybe wasn’t the most exciting of signings in an area of the squad that Liverpool needed to improve, what with midfielder James Milner deputising in that position for much of the 2016/17 season given Alberto Moreno’s struggles.
Yet Robertson has made the left back spot his own in the last 12 months or so since breaking into the first team, eventually going on to appear 22 times in the Premier League last season for the Reds in their run to fourth, as well as six of their last seven Champions League matches as they reached the final, only to lose to Real Madrid.
And with a goal and five assists in that time, the 24-year-old underlined his attacking pedigree but also showed adeptness defensively, which has been seen again this time round in starting all but one of their 16 games in the league and Champions League, helping Klopp’s side to eight clean sheets in that time.
But what is noticeable, as Mills rightly points out, is how much Robertson appears to be improving in this Liverpool team – there is now no doubting his place in the team despite failing to break through straight away upon arrival from Hull.
And that’s because the Scottish star is continuing to produce the goods at a consistently high-level in a side challenging for the title this season, be it going forward in laying on four assists in all competitions this term, or indeed in helping the team keep eight clean sheets so far this season.
And after another very accomplished display against Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham on Sunday, Mills is absolutely right to name him in his Team of the Week, at the same time accurately pointing out that the left back ‘seems to get better week in, week out’.
