Pundit’s Choice: Harry Winks - Pundits Choice

Tottenham supporters have been reasonably upbeat in recent times after seeing their side head into the current two-week break for internationals off the back of a Premier League win.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with newly-promoted Cardiff City at Wembley on October 6 off the back of going down 4-2 at home to Barcelona in the Champions League a few days earlier, and thus seeking a response against Neil Warnock’s side. And while they were far from their best, Spurs got the job done thanks to Eric Dier’s early goal to secure a 1-0 success at the national stadium, a result which moved them to within two points of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Tottenham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be interested in recent comments from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, who has backed midfielder Harry Winks to deputise for England against Spain tonight.

And with the ex-Liverpool defender stating that the Spurs man is as ‘good as anyone… in terms of technical ability’, Carragher’s glowing verdict on the 22-year-old is absolutely spot on, and as such he should be the man Gareth Southgate turns to in Seville this evening.

Ultimately, the Three Lions will face Luis Enrique’s men without midfielder Jordan Henderson, who will serve a suspension after picking up a yellow card in their UEFA Nations League draw in Croatia on Friday night.

Thus, the door is ajar for someone to come in and produce the goods against Spain tonight, and Carragher rightly underlines Winks’ ‘technical ability’ as the reason why he should get the nod to replace Henderson.

The 22-year-old has come up through the ranks at Tottenham and has since gone on to appear 70 times for the North London club following his debut back in November 2014, in which time he has shown to have genuine ability with the ball at his feet, something Carragher says will be vital against Spain this evening.

Enrique’s men are likely to have much of the possession in Seville tonight which is why Carragher underlines the importance of England being effective when they have the ball, and having someone good and calm in possession, who can use it efficiently in advanced situations, seems a no-brainer – Winks appears to be that man.

The midfielder may have only started four matches for Pochettino’s Spurs this season in all competitions, but one of those came in that defeat to Barca little under a fortnight ago, in which Winks produced a pretty decent display against ‘similar type of players’ England will face this evening, as Carragher underlines.

And having shown throughout his time at Tottenham to be very solid in possession and calm under pressure in that midfield area, Winks seems to be the ideal man to replace Henderson in the middle of the park this evening, as his use of the ball and ability to keep it will surely be vital for Southgate’s men against a side renowned for their own ability at retaining possession.

Thus, Carragher’s glowing verdict on Winks is absolutely spot on, which is why the Sky Sports pundit is right to call for the Tottenham man to start for the Three Lions this evening.
