Pundit’s Choice: Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United

Leeds United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the last few hours after seeing their side maintain their excellent start to the Championship season on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men went into their clash with struggling Preston North End top of the division having won four and drawn the other three of their opening seven league games, and thus full of confidence ahead of the visit of Alex Neil’s Lilywhites. And the Yorkshire giants produced another commanding performance as a brace from Tyler Roberts alongside a Liam Cooper header sealed a routine 3-0 victory for the Whites, in turn moving them three points clear at the summit of the second tier.

As such, there have been many thrilled Leeds fans up and down the country in recent times, and one man who was there to witness another excellent display from Bielsa’s side was Chief Sports Writer for The Mail on Sunday Oliver Holt, who was clearly in awe of the performance produced by the Yorkshire heavyweights.

And in repeatedly praising Bielsa’s side on Twitter for their display against Preston, Holt is absolutely right to gush over just how impressive the Whites have been in the second tier so far this term.

Ultimately, there was much excitement and indeed expectation among Leeds fans following the arrival of Bielsa during the summer, what with the Argentine supremely highly-rated as a coach – Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola labelled him ‘the best in the world’.

Yet surely even the most optimistic of Leeds fans wouldn’t have expected just how brilliant their side have been so far this term in winning five and drawing the other three of their eight league games – after all, the Championship is deemed by many as the most competitive league in Europe.

And in playing three times a week for much of the season so far, it has been particularly impressive just how well Bielsa’s side have maintained the intensity in their play from all the way back on the opening day, with his team again absolutely on it against Neil’s helpless Preston on Tuesday night.

Not only were they a ‘joy to watch’, as Holt rightly points out, but he also went on to say that it was ‘terrific to see a Championship team playing this kind of creative, technically assured football’ – again, it’s difficult to argue with that.

Not many sides over the years have had loads of success with playing that brand of football in the Championship, and it’ll be interesting to see whether Leeds are able to maintain that over the course of the 46-game season – yet early indications suggest that Bielsa’s men are going to take some stopping this time round.

As such, Holt is absolutely right to gush over just how brilliant Bielsa’s side were against Preston, and indeed how impressive they have been so far in the second tier this season.
